The Sky bill

What tv programmes do you watch-and I’m not talking about the mindless, vacant screen-staring time when you’re bored and can’t be bothered to do anything else…
What programmes do you watch, really watch, or learn from, or actually enjoy?

My sum total is maybe one or two hours, every few weeks, and that’s it. I might catch a couple of horizon episodes now and then, a gardening show, and a couple of proms in September. But seriously. 3 or 4 shows. And my Sky bill is how much? I’d give it up in a heartbeat.

TV. The mind-numbing, eye-destroying, conversation-halting, life wasting screen in the corner. The reason why so many people are fighting increasing levels of obesity, boredom and numbing inevitability. The way society can beam consumerist dreams into our mushy minds, creating hopeless, feeble sparks of desire, to spend what we’ve not already paid for on more junk, more crap to fill our 4 walls.

We pay to be sold to. Every hyper-realistic show, every second of screen time, is someone else’s viewpoint, presented in glorious colour, HD, 3D, 4K, giving us opinions so we don’t have to bother to think to even form our own.

And we sit, stare, blobbing vaguely in the general direction of the glowing rectangle, whilst outside the window, fresh breezes whirl, carrying sounds and smells and sights past the glass, unseen, unacknowledged, centuries of adventure, ignored, cast aside.

Instead of tuning in/out to the ‘greatest show on earth’…contemplate this.

The greatest show IS earth. And it’s on 24 hours a day.

Since I wrote this, we cancelled our Sky and still hardly watch any TV. Thumbs up!
